Big in Japan Oct. 18-24: Super Mario All-Stars

10/29/2010 Big in Japan Oct. 18-24: Super Mario All-Stars

Portly plumber 'S 25-year anniversary compilation dethrones Pokemon as the Vanquish, the Medal of Honor, a new storm releases Japanese sales charts.

After five straight weeks atop Media Create's Japanese game sales charts, Pokemon Black and White were finally bested during the October 18-24 period. Fans of the pocket monster hunting franchise can take some solace in the knowledge that it took a budget-priced release celebrating the 25th anniversary of an even bigger Nintendo icon to push Pokemon down the podium.

Traditionally, the 25-anniversary gift is silver.

Release the Wii in Super Mario All-Stars sold 307,755 copies in its debut week to take first place in the charts. Anniversary package includes all four Super Mario games from NES (including most other American and Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2), as well as retrospective booklet and a CD soundtrack. The game retails for 2500 ($ 31) in Japan and will launch in North America for $ 30 on Dec. 12.

Another three new releases took up residence in the back half of the top 10, starting with Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor. The modern-day Afghanistan-set shooter came in sixth place with 25,265 sold, and the publisher scored another new game on the charts with FIFA Soccer 11's ninth-place finish (18,995 sold).

The PlayStation Move motion-sensing controller was also released during the week, though it managed to place only one game in the top 10. The audio-driven art game Beat Sketcher finished in eighth place with 22,165 copies sold. Time Crisis: Razing Storm, the Resident Evil 5 Move Edition bundle, and Sports Champions also managed to make it into the top 20.

On the hardware chart, sales were down across the board. The consoles and handhelds finished in the same order as they did the previous week, with the PSP and PlayStation 3 on top, followed by Nintendo's DS family and Wii. After several weeks of relatively high sales, the PSP Go also saw its sales backslide for the week, as it dipped below 1,000 units sold after two weeks above that threshold.

TGS: New dual color PSPs are so sexy screenshot

I really tried to get some sexy pictures of the new dual color PSPs on the show floor here at Tokyo Game Show. They're really strict here about pictures at any booth, but Sony was out for blood today. I was even wearing the Sony PlayStation press badge, which is supposed to get you photo privileges. But today some dick was in the way and wasn't letting up.

Ah, it doesn't matter. They sent me some official pictures of the units, and we have them here. I really, really like the looks of the blue and white one. When I saw it in person I was sold. These are PSP-3000s are going to be released here in Japan on November 18th for 17,800 yen. Both of these systems will include a 2GB Mark2 Memory Stick Pro Duo.

The cool pouches you see in the pictures are not included. They will be sold separately for 1,800 yen.

Big in Japan Sept. 20-26: Yakuza PSP

Pokemon Black and White repeat as chart champs, but Sega's first handheld installment in organized crime action series comes in a solid second.

In the first week on sale in Japan, one-two punch of Pokemon Black and White sold the combined 2.6 million copies . The games sold considerably less in their second week, but still easily topped Media Create's Japanese sales chartsfor September 20-26, with 828,580 copies sold.

Yakuza's PSP debut pummeled most of the competition but couldn't top Pokemon.

Running a distant but still strong second with 174,213 sold was Sega's first PSP entry in the Yakuza series, Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou. The PSP action adventure game focuses on an up-and-coming fighter in the Japanese organized crime scene named Tatsuya Ukyo and features the series' standard mix of combat with assorted minigames like bowling and karaoke.

No other game on the charts even approached the 50,000-sold threshold for the week, with Nintendo's latest minigame collection Wii Party landing in third place with 43,077 sold. A number of familiar titles showed staying power on the chart, with Capcom's Monster Hunter spin-off MonHun Nikki taking fifth place with 18,652 sold and Square Enix's Front Mission Evolved holding onto seventh place with 14,339 sold.

On the hardware charts, the DSi continued to ride the Pokemon wave, coming in first for the second straight week with 49,411 units sold. However, the PSP overtook the DSi LL (known as the DSi XL in the West) for second place with 37,576 sold; Nintendo's supersized portable slipped to third with 32,777 sold. The PS3 was the best-selling console overall, with its 20,694 systems sold putting it fourth on the hardware charts, ahead of the Wii and its 16,908 sold.

Last week…s new release slate was spearheaded by zombies and soccerBut this week the attention of the vampires and basketball.

Leading the pack this week is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The first was teased March 2008 and formally announced during the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game drops this week for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Madrid, Spain-based Mercury Steam led development, with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and his Kojima Productions studio serving as support.

This isn't your mother's Castlevania.

As for the game, Lords of Shadow is set in the year 1047 and follows Gabriel Belmont, who is a member of the Brotherhood of Light. Gabriel's quest involves roaming the land in pursuit of pieces of an artifact that can bring the dead back to life, in the process battling nefarious underworld creatures and other mythical monsters and beasts.

Also dropping this week is Visual Concept…s NBA 2K11 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, and Wii. Legendary hall of famer Michael Jordan graces the title…s cover and is featured in the game as a playable character. Further, the game embraces Jordan more fully by including a handful of Jordan Challenges, including …The Flu Game.… In this 1997 NBA Final game, Jordan was violently ill and still managed to tally 39 points in a win. Players will have to match that feat to unlock additional goods.

Though NBA Elite 11 has been indefinitely postponed, EA Sports will still be slamming the hardwood with NBA Jam. The arcade basketball title is due out exclusively on the Wii this week, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are due out …by the holidays.… The game is a revival of the well-regarded 1993 arcade game of the same name and has been updated with new visuals and gameplay changes. The title sports two distinct modes: classic and remix tour, where gamers can play either in a traditional manner or with an array of new power-ups and battles, respectively.

On the portable game front, Square Enix this week is releasing Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The publisher is calling the title a "back to basics"contribution to the storied series, and it will give players more than the single player adventure.

Four-player co-op has been promised for the title, which will be a turn-based role-playing game. It will feature a class system akin to Final Fantasy X-2, with players being able to switch their character's class by changing the hat the character is wearing, Square Enix said.

Also being released this week is the Wii exclusive Wii Party. Having debuted in Japan in early July, Wii Party marks Nintendo…s first stab at the party genre since 2007…s Mario Party 8. The title is composed of 13 distinct game modes and packs in over 70 minigames. Nintendo recently purchased a majority stake in the game…s developer, ND Cube, a team arguably most famous for the Gameboy Advance title F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.

Shifting to the music-game space, Konami is bringing Def Jam: Rapstar to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii this week. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will come bundled with the game and a wired mic for $69.99, while the Wii package costs $59.99.

TGS: My mega frustration explained

TGS: My mega frustration explained screenshot

In my previous post, I briefly touched on my frustration with Capcom's upcoming Mega Man Universe, however it would seem many of you -- myself included -- wanted a bit more. To be honest, I originally felt that what little footage you may have seen would really speak for itself, but I get that it would probably help if I really explained my own experience and reasoning.

Join me after the break.

As I mentioned before, Capcom has a penchant for taking their classic games and attempting to reinvent them with varying degrees of success. With Mega Man Universe, They 'E. revived their classic platformer from scratch - and this means that in order to recreate the original gameplay with new and "improved" engine.

By sitting down to play the demo, I noticed that immedaitely Jump answer seemed a bit behind - that any Mega ManFan can tell you is an essential and could lead to any number of premature deaths. Initially, I chalked up this controller, but then discovered that others felt the issue on another set of UPS through out the show.

The gameplay issues are one thing,  but I also found the visuals a bit offensive. I know it might seem a bit silly to some of you, but I honestly feel that Capcom didn't show enough care when designing them -- which honestly blows my mind. Keiji Inafune even spent an hour the other evening telling a crowd that he wants every game to have that classic Capom feel, like it came out of Japan.  They often gets on Capcom USA's case for not living up to their expectations, but this title is being developed in Japan.

Frankly, their previous remakes for the PSP looked a million times better. Why they couldn't just use the same engine or build upon it is beyond me, but again, it's like they're reinventing that wheel in some kind of lame attempt to pull on our nostalgic heartstrings. And, if my previous experience with their classic remakes holds true, what they've shown us in development will likely remain largely unchanged in terms of gameplay. In short, I'm not expecting any changes for the better. Let's hope I'm wrong.
